Welcome back this week is going to involve 2 section. We will talk about Electronic Surveillance/ Detection Capability, Visual Surveillance/ Detection Capabilities.
Don’t let the name of the sections confuse or worry you. Just because it has the word surveillance does not mean there is malicious intent with it. This is just asking you if your aircraft has certain capabilities.
Onboard Aircraft
These next few questions are yes/no.
EO/IR= this stands for Electro-Optic/Infra-Red.
Terrain DetectionR = If you are using a system that has ground detection (like DJI) you more than likely have a terrain detection called vision position system. (VPS)
Weather/Icing detection= most likely you don’t have this on a drone. Its heavy and uses a lot of power.
Onboard Radar= This would be if you have a system that emits a signal and receives a signal to know the location of other aircraft. This type of technology is quickly making its way in to the drone world so research your aircraft to find out.
Other= this is another word document that you upload if they didn’t mention it above. I.E. Gas detection, Radiation detection stuff like that.
Electronic Detection Systems = This would have things like X-Ray or metal detection, something along those lines.
Ground Based
Radar Observation (ATC,Etc)= will your ground station talk to ATC? Yes/no
If yes, then attach the NAS Operational capability form here.
Next section is the Visual surveillance/Detection Capability. This will cover how your aircraft will be monitored while in the NAS. Remember this applies to your visual observers as well.
Maximum Distance from UA: Vertical: ???? Feet and Horizontal ??? Nautical/ Statute Miles
You can select what you want but remember 400 ft AGL is the max height per the FAA. If you have an aircraft that must operate over 400 ft call us we can guide you in the right direction to get you airborne. The Horizontal distance is what you choose. I like to go 0.5 miles because when my drone is that far it looks like a gnat and any farther I can no longer maintain visual line of sight.
Airborne based: yes/no
Ground Based: yes/no
Visual observation from one or more ground sites: yes/no
Forward or side looking cameras: yes/no
You will need to upload word docx. files that describe your answers. Type of camera and if it's capable of 360 degree view. The VO file is a basic “A visual observer will be present for all flights. Pilot and VO will maintain at a minimum radio communication. The VO will be on the ground or a place of visual advantage to keep visual sight of the UAS during flight. “ It's not hard just cumbersome.
Next week we will cover the Aircraft Performance Recording section and a few more. Thanks for joining me this week this is Nate signing off, drink whisky, fly drones, shoot guns, (but not at the same time) and have fun in life. Semper FI
